Cabrini Green Legal Aid (CGLA) has strengthened lives, assisted families and supported communities --- one person at a time for over 40 years. CGLA does more than give people a second chance --- we are addressing the root causes of unemployment, homelessness, poverty and other challenges that contribute to crime and recidivism. CGLA strives to bring about substantive, transformational change in the lives of those we serve by using a holistic model that integrates the delivery of legal services with interdisciplinary social work services and collaborative supportive social services through strategic partnerships with social service providers, government agencies, and other legal aid organizations. Legal services focus on those negatively impacted by the criminal legal system through representation in criminal and civil proceedings and advocacy for relief under criminal records laws.

Overview of Position

The Criminal Records Program provides high-volume legal services to over 5,000 men and women each year in the Chicagoland area who are seeking to remove barriers imposed by their criminal records through expungement and sealing, pardons, health care waivers and certificates. The primary responsibilities of this role are to implement CGLA’s priorities in the criminal records practice, represent clients in criminal records-related matters and to train and supervise fellows, interns, and volunteers to assure quality legal services and representation. Services are performed at CGLA’s office, at remote locations, including Help Desks at the Daley Center in downtown Chicago, south suburban Cook County (Markham), at the offices of designated community partners, and in Cook County circuit courts.

Essential Duties

Provides direct legal services to CGLA clients for criminal records matters, including representation in court and administrative proceedings, maintaining a manageable caseload proportionate to other responsibilities.

• Supervises volunteers at CGLA’s criminal records help desks up to three shifts per week.

• Cultivates and manages relationships with partner agencies and organizations that refer clients to CGLA as assigned.

• Conducts criminal records classes as assigned throughout the year for prospective volunteers, including lawyers, law firms, and law students.

• Collaborates with criminal records attorneys and others as needed to prepare and distribute educational materials for criminal records matters.

• Maintains up-to-date client information in CGLA’s case management system to ensure accurate data collection and statistical tracking.

• Conducts community outreach and training events as assigned.

• Design legal manuals and other materials for clients, attorneys, courts and other personnel as assigned.

• Works with the CGLA leadership team to ensure all program goals are met each fiscal year.


Required Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

• A demonstrated commitment to social justice and criminal justice reform.

• Licensed to practice in Illinois.

• Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.

• The ability to work collaboratively with staff, interns and volunteers.

• The ability to supervise interns and volunteers.

• The ability to manage multiple projects and a variety of tasks and meet all deadlines while being energized by the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, team-centered environment.
